You've tried everything... and it still hasn't clicked.
You’ve joined Facebook groups, Discord servers, and workshops, hoping (even crossing your fingers) that this time you’d meet your person. But without any real matching or structure, you’re basically relying on luck, and the luck isn’t working.
You're tired of wasting time on trial-and-error partnerships.
You don’t have time to vet people for months hoping something sticks. You just want a dependable process that helps you find the right fit fast.
You keep ending up with mismatches or ghosting.
You finally find someone to check in with, and then… silence. The chemistry’s off. Maybe they don’t really relate to your support style, or things just don’t click.
Finding your writing bff shouldn't feel like creative Tinder.
It’s hard to find the right person on the internet! You don’t want to invest your energy into someone only to realize two weeks later they’ve vanished, lost interest, or were never really your kind of person to begin with. You don’t want to gamble your time (or sanity) on a total stranger when you have no idea who is on the other side.
You don't want just feedback. You want a friendship.
You’re not looking for another critique swap. (Maybe at some point!) You want to share your writing journey with someone, not just the pages! You want accountability, motivation, and someone who actually gets your creative brain. Someone to text “You writing today?” and who celebrates the messy progress with you.
You want connection that actually lasts.
You’re craving a creative partnership built on trust, care, and repair. Someone you can lean on for years to come.
You want support.
You’ve tried writing schedules, productivity hacks, even guilt-tripping yourself into “just doing it.”
But staying consistent isn't really just about willpower. It’s about being witnessed. It’s about walking the creative path with others you can lean on.
Consistency isn't about just discipline. It's about connection.
When someone else sees your progress, celebrates your tiny wins, or checks in when you disappear, your motivation changes. You feel taken seriously. You start recognizing yourself as a writer. You feel seen, in the best way.
Still need to watch the Missing Link to Consistent Writing workshop replay? I've got you.

Why having the right buddy works
Without Support
Motivation fades after a few weeks
Writing feels lonely and isolating
Deadlines slide & you don't take yourself seriously
You have no one to "turn to" for this important part of your life
With Support
You keep momentum because someone's in it with you
You feel seen, encouraged, and accountable
You actually finish what you start
Someone else can finally see the world you've been carrying inside you

There was an expert level of care given to the process of being matched
I used to write completely alone — for ten years, I kept my process tucked away, unsure if letting anyone in would help. But the solitude started to weigh on me.
Joining Monica’s matchmaking program changed everything.
From the start, it felt magical — like the universe opened the exact right door. I was matched with writing partners who reignited my motivation and reminded me what joy in writing feels like again.
Now I have structure, accountability, and friendships that make showing up to the page something I want to do.
Anne I.
Can you imagine?
You wake up to a “You’ve got this 💪” message before your writing session. You send a “TELL ME MY WORDS AREN’T TRASH” text on a bad day — and your buddy replies, “They’re not. Keep going.”
Writing that feels lighter and consistent
You sit down to write and want to show up, because someone else is showing up too. Your writing buddy is waiting, cheering, checking in, 🥰 and suddenly, you’re not doing it alone anymore.
Writing begins to feel like a place of belonging. A creative home
Writing stops feeling like an isolated and lonely grind and starts feeling like belonging ❤️ like being truly seen for the writer you already are.
Support that fits like a glove
You’re matched with someone who actually gets your creative rhythm. Your goals, your communication style, your vibe. They’ve been thoughtfully vetted and matched with you, so with the right nurturing, your relationship can last.
It’s like finding the person who speaks your creative language fluently, even the unspoken parts. 🥹
Motivation that sticks—so you can reach the results you want
No more guilt, ghosting, or shame spirals alone. You have the type of support you need when you're facing challenges. You build writing confidence, stay consistent, and finally feel momentum because you're connected. 💫
The shortcut to getting your match
Finding this kind of creative connection shouldn’t rely on luck.
That’s why I created the Writing Buddy and Critique Partner Matchmaking Program — a thoughtful, human-centered system that matches writers based on their values, pace, personality, and partnership style.
No more crossing your fingers in Facebook groups or sending awkward “Wanna write together?” DMs.
You deserve something bespoke: a connection that isn’t left to chance, but hand-picked with care for your creative energy and goals.
Fill out our deep-dive survey (it’s practically magic ✨) and we do the rest. We match you based on your energy, rhythm, and creative heartbeat — the small, human details that make a partnership click and keep it alive.
Finding your people shouldn't feel like a gamble, or require so much trial and error. We want it to feel like coming home.
The Results of a Great Writing Buddy Match
You take your writing more seriously. Knowing you'll have someone to check in with you and keep you accountable will get you to your goals 10x faster.
You recover faster from setbacks. Let's face it, life happens and we all fall off the writing wagon from time to time. But having a buddy makes a difference. You'll have somewhere to land & get support to help you get back on the wagon.
You write more consistently.
Having someone checking in on you and encouraging you will keep you showing up to the page & making those dreams come true.
You uplevel your writing life. You finish drafts, revise with purpose, and submit your work if that's your goal.
You’re not doing it in a vacuum. You'll have a cheerleader who is invested in your success.

Every match is hand-selected by Monica - a human (not an algorithm!) using a holistic process that looks at the art, the energy, and the heart behind your creative life. The vibe, basically.
Testimonial
This matchmaking program is so unique. I’ve honestly never had this kind of support before. I’m writing more, I feel seen, and I finally have people who cheer me on.
The survey itself made me think a lot deeper about how I function as a writer, buddy, and person. And answering all those questions thoughtfully resulted in getting two buddies who I genuinely enjoy talking to, encouraging, and getting to know.
Monica put SO much thought into all of this and it's very clear that she really cares about making sure we all get buddies we can really connect with. I have written more in the few weeks since connecting with my buddies and having that extra accountability and encouragement than I have in months! The writing buddy program is great and so far has great results for me (plus, I've gotten to know two other great people and writers)!

Testimonials
It's so worth it!
It's such a unique program. You can feel confident in knowing Monica has put SO much thought into the matches, so your odds of finding a buddy you really align with are high. Don't be scared to pull that trigger on the survey! It can feel like a lot to answer, but it's SO worth it in the end!

"She waved her magic wand... and found me my people."
Monica’s matchmaking program was the jumpstart my writing journey needed. I hadn’t written in months and was starting to lose any desire I had for writing.
Enter Monica the Matchmaker, waving her glitter magic wand and saving the day yet again. She knew how hard it is to find a group of people you can trust with your writing.
She solved it by teaching us how to be good writing buddies and critique partners, then gave us a detailed questionnaire that helped her truly understand what each of us needed to succeed.
This process makes it so easy — you don’t have to search on your own. It’s a zero-judgment, 100% acceptance zone. You set your boundaries, choose how often you communicate, and even decide whether you want gentle encouragement or tough love. There’s guidance every step of the way.

Every match I've made has been kind, supportive, and creatively aligned
I joined Monica’s program specifically for the matchmaking — and it’s been a wonderful experience.
The questionnaire was super in-depth (and honestly, that’s what makes it work). Every match I’ve made has been kind, supportive, and creatively aligned.
I’ve found real accountability and connection with other writers — people who care, share feedback, and help me brainstorm ideas. The community is warm, encouraging, and genuinely invested.
No regrets — just real connection.

This is the first and only matchmaking program for writers
No one else is doing this. I’ve looked.
You can scroll Facebook groups, hop from Discord to Discord, or ask around at workshops — but there is nowhere else you can be matched this intentionally, this deeply, and this humanly.
This isn’t just a directory where you put your name in a spreadsheet and hope someone finds you. It’s a framework that was built by a writer who understands both the publishing world and the emotional realities of a creative life.
Matches Based on Who You Are (Not Just What You Write)
Most programs stop at genres or levels of prose. We go further. We match you based on your energy, creative rhythm, communication style, and values. The things that actually make partnerships last.
The secret to consistency and creative success isn’t just genre alignment, it’s human alignment. Matches based on energy, values, and creative chemistry, not just what you write, but how you write and why.
A One-of-a-Kind Space for Creative Connection
There are writing groups, critique swaps, and accountability threads everywhere. But a matchmaking system that pairs you with compatible partners designed by someone who’s been in the trenches of publishing and coaching hundreds of writers exists only here.
I don’t say this lightly.

I had always struggled with simply completing works and a lot of them would end up sitting in the "ideas" pile for months to even years. I tried so many things to get myself to write: join a community on discord, tried to meet up with people, tried a planner, and even go off to coffee shops to try and write. Each had their own reasons for failing but mainly it did have to do with life getting too busy.
However, it changed when I joined the matchmaking program. The surveys provided were so incredibly detailed and felt like a mix of a personality quiz and consultation review.
Not only are my writing buddies amazing but they also hold me accountable, the threat of a due date with the consequence of disappointing your buddy truly is the best recipe to get the words out. I wholeheartedly recommend this program for struggling writers like me who could not get the words out, who could not finish their book. It's definitely changed the way I approach writing.
Toni
This new critique partnership is a truly bespoke match. My critique partner and I share a lot of overlapping interests and expectations around genre and style, similar ambitions with our writing, and we're well-matched in experience. That made it easy to get a running start. So far we've run over time during all of our meetings because we're so excited to talk about the writing process and each others' work. I'm really impressed with the outcome of the matching process!
Writer in San Francisco
Every group or community prior seemed like luck of the draw, and without much structure, and like a fend for yourself position. The matchmaking detail and care in this process really felt safer, more supportive to me and felt like it could actually work. Before : Isolated, lack of focus, feeling stuck and unsure what to focus on next and that I’d never finish, which must mean I wasn’t good enough to even write a full book. Me after: Joyous, settled, confident I can actually do this!

“It’s like Monica plucked my perfect writing buddy out of the universe.”
We’re on the same wavelength — it’s a little weird (in the best way).
“While my family supports me, they don’t really understand what it’s like being a writer. I felt isolated, and there was no real motivation to keep going when I got stuck. I’m SO GLAD I signed up for this program. Monica worked really hard to match people and it shows.
My buddy and I meet twice weekly and it’s really helped me get back on track with my work in progress. Having a scheduled time to meet with someone has made moments when I’m stuck easier to grind through.
We’re on the same wavelength so much that it’s a little weird. The more I get to know her, the more we have in common — it goes way beyond writing. We’ve been texting a lot, quoting the same dumb movies, and it’s been really fun.
This was the first time I’d ever tried to find a writing buddy, and honestly, the idea used to give me anxiety. I didn’t know where to start or what to ask someone. The survey took all that stress away. The questions made it clear what I needed in a partner and even helped me understand my own process better.
The survey was thorough but not overwhelming, and the masterclass taught me what to expect and how to show up for my partner.
Long story short? I highly recommend Monica’s program!”

"I feel like I've found my people."
Joining Monica Hay's writer matchmaking program was one of the best decisions I've made for my writing career. I've always struggled with finding a community of writers who are as dedicated and supportive as I am. This program has provided me with a fantastic group of like-minded individuals. The structured approach to sharing work and providing critique has not only helped me improve my craft but has also boosted my confidence in a way I didn't think was possible. The camaraderie and encouragement are invaluable. I feel like I've found my people, and because of Monica's program, I'm more motivated than ever to keep writing and growing.

"I'm more excited about this story than I have been in years!"
I needed a gentle way to bring in accountability. I chose to also be paired with a Critique partner for the feedback on my work and the commitment to offer feedback as well. The magic of this matchmaking program gifted me with a CP who is also a developmental editor which is more that I would have hoped for. My writing buddies are also a gift to me, to my writing, and to the quality of the time I spend writing.

"Very unique program, way easier than trying to find a partner on your own"
The surveys were well thought out and very introspective which led to finding a great writing buddy who really got me, understood my struggles, and we immediately bonded. We text encouragement, and share articles and tools to further our skills. Highly recommend this program!
Monica Hay
Hi, I’m Monica Hay—writing coach, creative matchmaker, and founder of The Writer’s Way.
I’ve got a Master’s in Publishing from Portland State University and a BA in English Literature from UC Berkeley (I like to call myself a recovering academic). Before coaching, I worked at two literary agencies and served as the Director’s Assistant at WriteOnCon, an online children’s publishing conference. My work’s been featured in Dabble Writer, the Perfect Your Process Summit, and on multiple podcasts.
I blend my background in social work and book publishing to help writers overcome resistance, reconnect with their creativity, embrace messy drafts, and actually finish their work. My focus is on creative recovery: helping writers master the inner game of writing: the mind, the emotions, the messy middle.
I’m best known for saying: “No Mess, No Magic.”
Since launching the Writing Buddy Matchmaking Program, I’ve personally reviewed over 110 surveys, created 15 small writing groups, and matched writers into partnerships that have led to finished drafts, revived momentum, and friendships that have lasted well beyond the program.
I believe creativity is our birthright, and that with the right support, every writer can find their people and their rhythm again.
I've been writing for decades now, and I've participated in many groups along the way. But never have I encountered a matchmaking program as truly outstanding as the one in the Writer's Way. I can't recommend it highly enough!
The survey blew me away with its thoroughness and thoughtfulness, and how it caused me to really dig deep and connect with my own reasons for writing, why I was wrestling with resistance so often, and how buddies could help overcome that resistance. Once I filled out the survey and sent it in, I went around telling anyone who would listen how I was newly energized, inspired and hopeful about committing to writing in a more meaningful way, thanks to the WW matchmaking program. And that excitement and enthusiasm only intensified when I received my awesome matches!
Monica is fabulous-- that rare mix of naturally inspiring and motivating to begin with, but also whip-smart and deeply knowledgable about the brain science and psychology that creatives need (and as if that weren't enough, a wonderfully kind human too!). In other words, an encourager and an expert! This community is what my writing life was lacking, which is why I feel so gobsmackingly lucky and grateful that I found it! If you wanna get more words down on the page *and* feel really good and supported in the process, the WW matchmaking party is for you!

The Writer's Way Community

Is this right for you?
This is for you if..
You're excited and maybe even a little nervous about joining. (Many of the people in our last round felt this way too!)
You're finally ready to stop doing this writing thing alone
You’re ready to find a partner who fits your vibe — someone who gets your creative chaos and your goals.
You value emotional safety, kindness, and honest communication.
You’re willing to show up for another writer, not just for yourself.
You’re open to growth, repair, and the beautifully messy humanity that comes with collaboration.
Not right now if:
You’re elitist about genre or dismissive of what other writers love (we don’t do hierarchy here).
You want a buttoned up "professional" community where everyone masks their weird and pretends to have it all together.
You prefer polished over real talk. I'm not your person if you want corporate energy, fake niceness, or want people to censor themselves.
You're stuck in "nothing ever works for me" mode and not ready to take responsibility.
You drain instead of contribute. You expect others to hold space for you, but never return the favor.
You expect people to get everything right the first time, every time. (Humans make mistakes and they're messy!)

Frequently Asked Questions
Writing Buddy - also called Accountability Buddy, Writing Partner, Creative Companion, Writing Bestie, Cheerleader, Creative Collaborator.... whatever suits your fancy!
Think of it like having a writing bestie: someone who gets it, and keeps you doing the work—especially when it gets hard.
This kind of relationship is powerful for taking yourself seriously.
You can still talk story & craft with this person! But the main goal isn’t that you have to swap pages and offer feedback/critique.
Critique Partner - feedback partner, developmental partner. You choose your terms!
A good CP doesn’t just tell you what works or what doesn’t. They help you become a better writer.
They challenge and support you and help you level up. They’re your first reader, your revision brainstormer, your “this part isn’t landing yet” truth-teller. Think of them as a creative partner.
Here’s how it works:
November 11 – Doors to The Writer’s Way Membership open! This is your chance to join and participate in the upcoming matching round.
November 11 – Surveys go live inside the membership. You’ll get access to both a PDF version of the survey, and the link to the official survey.
We recommend checking out the PDF survey and preparing your answers. Then when the answers are done, you can go to the official Writing Buddy Google Link and copy and paste your answers.
November 17 – Doors close to the membership. After this date, no new members will be accepted—and we don’t know when it will open again.
November 30 – Final day to fill out your surveys. This is your deadline to be considered for this round of matching.
November 30 - January 2026– Our team carefully reviews submissions and works on creating thoughtful matches.
January 2026 – Matches will be announced! You'll receive your partner(s) and get access to the matching portal.
For Critique Partner Matches: Want a CP? Complete the CP survey and get matched in 3–6 months. Why the wait? We focus on good matches, not fast ones. We aim to match CPs once we receive 30+ CP surveys.
You’ll find a preview of all the Writing Buddy and Critique Partner questions inside the membership portal. This lets you take your time to reflect, draft your answers, and even write them in a separate doc before submitting.
The official surveys are hosted on Google Forms. When you're ready, just copy and paste your answers into the form and hit submit!
✨ We highly recommend reading through the questions in advance so you can answer thoughtfully—these matches are meant to last, and the more intentional your answers, the better your match.
Every writer is at a different stage in their journey. Some are still learning their voice, want to practice in private, and simply aren’t ready to share their art with others.
Those writers want to make writer relationships, but there aren’t a lot of spaces online for this.
Most spaces are built to help CPs match - which is great! But that often leaves writers who just want writer friends feeling left out.
It’s also important for me to note:
Sharing our writing is extremely vulnerable. I see a lot of writers in my practice who shared “baby art” and had poor experiences, and so they were left traumatized & put writing away for a long time.
Some writers want to keep their work close to them as they build confidence and skills.
I want to welcome those writers into this space. I want them to find creative relationships too.
Totally valid! A lot of writers are in this place of uncertainty.
If this is you, I recommend signing up for a Writing Buddy first, depending on your goals. You can reach out to a CP in the future (by checking out the profiles of others in the community).
How the Matching Process Works
Whether you’re looking for an accountability buddy, a critique partner, or both, our goal is to match you with someone whose writing goals, communication style, and experience level complement yours.
Watch the Orientation Video (about 15 minutes long) so you know what to expect in the matchmaking process.
Fill out the in-depth intake questionnaire. This is the most important part of the process, so take your time!
We’ll ask about:
Using the information from the forms, we’ll match you with someone who aligns well with your writing journey. It’s not just about genre—it’s about pacing, tone, goals, and personality fit.
We look for:
Once you’re matched, you’ll receive an introduction email or message connecting you and your potential buddy/CP. This includes:
You are free to do a 2- to 4-week trial period. During this time:
Sometimes partnerships just don’t work out. That’s okay! If you and your buddy are mismatched or your schedules change, you can go to the online portal for members and check out other profiles. If you’d like more matches in the future, you can submit the form agai in the future, during a new round.
To help everyone create strong, meaningful connections, we give you 1-2 people for a writing buddy. We’ll start at 1 CP, but if there are a few people who seem to be a good match for CPs, we’ll ask you what your preferences are.
If you're also interested in being part of a small group (3–4 people), you'll have the option to indicate that. We can’t guarantee group matches for everyone, but we’ll absolutely try to make it work when we have compatible groups.
Writers at all levels are welcome! We ask about your experience level to ensure you’re matched with someone compatible.
Yes! Writing Buddy matches are perfect for writers at any stage — from idea to final draft. Critique Partner matching is better suited if you have pages ready (or nearly ready) to exchange, but you don’t need to be done with a draft to participate.
Yes! Writers of all genres and formats are welcome to join the program—whether you’re working on fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, screenplays, graphic novels, or even cookbooks. We celebrate creative diversity and believe every writer deserves community and support.
That said, some genres are more common than others, so while we do our best to match you with someone who shares similar interests, we can’t always guarantee a perfect genre match—especially for highly specialized formats like cookbooks, graphic novels, or experimental hybrid work.
In these cases, we focus on matching you with someone who:
Respects and appreciates your format
Shares similar writing goals or feedback needs
Is open to learning about or working outside their usual genre
You can also specify if a genre match is important to you, and we’ll take that into account when matching.
No worries! Not every match will be perfect. We encourage you to allow time for your buddy/CP to make a true relationship first, before moving on. If you'd like a new match, you can head to the online portal and browse other members to reach out to new folks. You can also participate again in a new round.
We created a WHOLE bonus PDF on “100+ Questions to Deepen Your Partnership”! AND we have a whole bonus PDF on “The Writer’s Menu: Things to Do With Your Buddy”! You'll never have to worry about what to talk about or what to do.
Some common things include:
If we do future rounds, yes. While we can’t guarantee when the next round will open, we aim to offer it every 2–3 months. In the meantime, you can always browse and connect with others via the portal.
It’s a searchable, private space on our membereshop portal where you can view other writers’ survey answers and reach out to anyone who feels like a good fit. Think of it as a bonus matchmaking tool you can use anytime.
No. You'll have the option to opt in to have your profile included in the private membership portal. This gives you the opportunity to be discovered for future matches, even beyond this current round. Since we aren't guaranteeing that we'll offer the matchmaking program again, this is a great option for keeping the door open for new writing buddies later on.
If you prefer to stay more private, you can opt out, and your responses will only be used for your initial match.
If you do choose to opt in, you can still stay anonymous. You’re welcome to use a nickname or pen name, and we recommend using an email that doesn’t include your real name if anonymity is important to you.
Yes. Due to the labor-intensive work of matching, and the security needs involved, you must be an active member.
Security, baby! Because relationships work best in a trusted, shared space. Hosting the program inside the community allows for more accountability, safety, and ease of communication, and ensures everyone has access to the portal and shared resources in a closed environment (aka, not where the whole internet can see).
The portal is only accessible to people who’ve opted into the community, so it's a secure space.
That’s totally okay. Just be honest—there are no wrong answers. The more clarity you have, the easier it is to match you, but we understand that creative journeys evolve.
All members are required to watch the “How to Be a Good Buddy/CP” Masterclass before participating the matching program, and they're required to watch the Instructions Video.
That said, we don’t do background checks or monitor conversations — you are responsible for your own boundaries and decisions.
That’s also why participation is only open to active members of The Writer’s Way community. Limiting matches to paying members helps create a secure, intentional space—so you’re not being paired with random internet strangers. It ensures that everyone involved has taken a clear step to watch the masterclass, answer the surveys intentionally, and join a values-aligned community. This added layer of protection helps reduce the risk of inappropriate behavior, ghosting, or mismatched expectations, and increases the likelihood that you're connecting with respectful and committed writers.
No. These partnerships are self-directed. You are responsible for your own communication, boundaries, and relationship. We trust our members to act with integrity and respect as adults.
Yes. These matches are your relationships -- you can stay in contact with anyone you've been matched with whether or not you are an active community member!
That said, we'll remove your profile from the members portal, and you won't be able to browse more matches since you won't have access to the portal.
Yes, you can cancel your membership at any time! Just keep in mind that billing is done on a 3-month, 6-month, or yearly cycle (depending on the plan you chose). When you cancel, your membership will remain active until the end of your current billing period. After that, you won’t be charged again and your access will end.
We have a peace-of-mind guarantee! You can ask for a refund within 48 hours of your purchase if you sign up and change your mind. We want you to feel confident that you are in safe hands.
After that, all sales are final.
